Orbis Supported Vision Center Ensure Quality Eye Care for Children
Jannatul Maowa is a 9-year-old girl who lives with her maternal grandmother, Rahima Begum, in a rural village of Ramganj Upazilla, under Lakshmipur District of Bangladesh. Like the majority of their community, the family farms their small plot of land to provide for themselves. Her parents live her few years ago, when she was only 4 years old due to their marital separation.
Rahima Begum had noticed for a few years that something was off with her granddaughter’s vision, particularly during his study. She became concerned for Jannatul Maowa’s ability to succeed in school and for her future.
Fortunately for the people like Jannatul Maowa, a Vision Center was setup in Ramganj to identify and treat people in need of eye care. Also recently, a community movilizer appoint in the vision center to screen door to door to identify children with visual problems. Accordingly, we found Jannatul Maowa of Village Ratanpur, Post office: Ratanpur under Ramganj Upazilla a school going kid in her grandmother’s home due to nationwide holiday in school because of COVID-19 pandemic. The Community movilizer noticed a white vision problems and headache on Jannatul Maowa’s eye and referred her to the Vision Center established by Orbis International under “Making Primary eye care available and accessible through Vision Center for rural community”. Rahima Begum, who had never been visit to eye doctor before, was hesitant to seek eye care for her granddaughter but the Vision Technician eased her fears. To reassure Rahima Begum, the Community movilizer bring her to the Vision center and introduced to other patients who were had been received eye care from Vision Center.
At the Vision Center, Md. Saiful Islam, Ophthalmic Paramedic and vision center in-charge examined Jannatul Maowa and noted her sign, visual acuity as VAR 6/36 and VAL 6/24 and symptoms including refractive error in her both eyes. After noting sign and symptoms, Saiful Islam appoints tele-consultation with Dr. Zahir Uddin, Pediatric Ophthalmologist of the hospital for Jannatul Maowa’s diagnosis and treatment.
As per patient’s history and video consultation Jannatul Maowa was diagnosed as visually impaired and she need to wear glasses as per following prescription. Thanks to the generosity of Orbis Hong Kong and its donors for setting up this vision center to help Jannatul Maowa by providing a colorful spectacle free of charge.
Now, Jannatul Maowa can read and write smoothly and hop she will be successful in school with the hope of one day becoming a doctor.
