The Women-Led Green Vision Center Project is a groundbreaking initiative designed to expand quality eye care services in Chandpur while empowering women and promoting environmentally responsible healthcare.
Supported by Orbis International and implemented by Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, this project focuses on creating sustainable, energy-efficient vision centers operated primarily by trained female eye-care professionals.
Delivering eye care services in rural areas presents significant challenges that affect timely diagnosis and treatment. Limited transportation and long travel distances make it difficult for many patients—especially the elderly, women, and low-income families—to reach specialized eye care facilities. A shortage of trained eye-care professionals in remote regions further reduces access to quality services, often leading to delayed detection of conditions like cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Awareness about eye health is also low, causing many individuals to ignore symptoms until vision loss becomes severe. These barriers highlight the need for community-based outreach, vision centers, and innovative service models to ensure equitable eye care for all.
A sustainable solution to these rural challenges lies in expanding community-based Vision Centers strengthened by women’s leadership and modern technology. Women-led Vision Centers ensure inclusive, patient-friendly service delivery while empowering local women with clinical and managerial skills. Equipped with solar power, these centers maintain uninterrupted operations even in areas with unstable electricity, ensuring reliable diagnostic and treatment services. Teleconsultation allows on-site vision technicians to connect instantly with ophthalmologists at the base hospital, enabling timely diagnosis, treatment decisions, and referral when needed. Together, these innovations create a resilient and accessible model that brings quality eye care directly to rural communities.
The project has achieved remarkable results, significantly strengthening community eye health across Chandpur and surrounding areas. Through the establishment of three sustainable Vision Centers, thousands of rural residents now have regular access to quality eye care close to home. Over the project period, more than 75,000 patients received essential eye care services, while more than 500 frontline healthcare providers and community leaders were trained and oriented to support early detection and referral. The initiative successfully restored sight to over 2,000 cataract patients through free and subsidized surgeries, dramatically improving their quality of life. Additionally, more than 5,000 free spectacles were distributed to individuals in need, helping children learn better, adults work confidently, and elderly patients regain independence.
