Blindness caused by cataract remains one of the leading causes of visual impairment in Bangladesh, disproportionately affecting people in rural areas with limited access to modern eye care. To address this challenge, Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur in collaboration with Orbis International has launched the “Expanding Access to Quality Cataract Surgery in Bangladesh (Comprehensive Cataract Services Project)”. This initiative aims to drastically expand eye care coverage and strengthen cataract surgical services, especially for underserved and low-income populations throughout Bangladesh.
Supported by Orbis International and implemented by Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, this project focuses on creating opportunity for the poor and ultra poor community people to regain their eisight by modern technique Cataract Surgery.
Why This Project Matters
Cataract blindness is preventable but remains prevalent due to barriers such as poverty, distance to services, lack of awareness and transport costs.
Rural communities often lack access to quality eye care, forcing many to live with impaired vision that affects daily life, productivity and independence.
This project works to ensure that affordable, high-quality cataract surgery is accessible to people who otherwise would have no opportunity for sight-restoring care.

Comprehensive Screening & Identification
Community eye screenings and outreach camps are organized across rural districts to identify individuals with cataract and other treatable eye conditions. These screenings help ensure early detection and appropriate referral for surgery.
Surgical Services at BNSB Eye Hospital
Patients identified with cataract are referred to Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital where they receive modern, safe, and affordable cataract surgery. The hospital’s experienced ophthalmologists and surgical teams deliver world-class care, with an emphasis on quality and outcomes.
Training & Capacity Building
The project supports clinical training and workshops for eye care professionals. This enhances surgical skills and ensures that the hospital’s surgical teams are equipped with the latest techniques and best practices.
