Eye Care and Surgical Intervention for Ultra Poor Children in BangladeshA Life Changing Vision-Restoring Project Supported by Helpster Charity and Implemented by Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur

CHILDREN’s LIVES SAVED | ONE BY ONE | DIRECTLY | HELPSTER CHARITY

The “Eye Care and Surgical Intervention for Ultra Poor Children in Bangladesh” project is a life-changing initiative aimed at restoring vision and preventing avoidable blindness among the most vulnerable children of Bangladesh. Supported generously by Helpster Charity, and implemented by Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, the project delivers free eye surgeries, laser treatments, and advanced retinal care to children who otherwise have no access to essential eye health services.

This one-year project (July 2025 – June 2026) is designed to bring hope, healing, and equal opportunity to children living in ultra-poor communities across Bangladesh.

Eye Care and Surgical Intervention for Ultra Poor Children in Bangladesh

Who We Support

The project specifically supports children from ultra-poor families who require:

  • Cataract Surgery
  • ROP Treatment with Anti-VEGF Injections
  • Retinal Laser Treatments
  • Glaucoma and congenital eye surgeries
  • Other sight-saving ophthalmic interventions

These services are provided free of charge, ensuring that no child is denied vision due to economic hardship.

Where We Work

Although the project is primarily based in Chandpur District, outreach support is extended to other districts where children require specialized eye treatment.

All surgeries and treatments are conducted at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, Chandpur, a leading institution in child eye care.

Pediatric Cataract Surgeries

Pediatric cataract is one of the leading causes of childhood blindness in Bangladesh. Without timely surgery, children risk permanent visual impairment, developmental delays, and barriers to education.

Under this project, 100 ultra-poor children will receive free pediatric cataract surgery, including:

  • Complete pre-operative assessment
  • Biometry and selection of appropriate intraocular lens (IOL) power
  • Modern cataract extraction using safe and child-friendly techniques
  • Implantation of IOL to restore clear vision
  • Post-operative medication and follow-up visits
  • Monitoring of refractive changes and visual development

These surgeries dramatically improve visual clarity, enabling children to read, learn, and participate actively in daily life.

Restoring vision and preventing lifelong blindness

ROP Management & Anti-VEGF Treatments

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a serious retinal disease that affects babies born prematurely. If untreated, ROP can rapidly progress to retinal detachment and permanent blindness.

The project supports 100 premature infants through specialized ROP care, including:

a) Screening and Diagnosis

  • Retinal evaluation using indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Classification of ROP stage and zone
  • Early identification of high-risk infants in NICUs

b) Anti-VEGF Intravitreal Injections

  • Administered under strict aseptic conditions
  • Controls abnormal blood vessel growth
  • Effective for aggressive or posterior ROP

c) Laser Photocoagulation Therapy

  • Gold-standard treatment for threshold ROP
  • Prevents retinal detachment
  • Stabilizes retinal development

d) Long-term Follow-up

  • Regular post-treatment retinal evaluations
  • Monitoring for refractive errors and amblyopia
  • Guidance for parents on neonatal eye care

This comprehensive ROP management helps save the vision of premature babies at the most vulnerable stage of their lives.

Saving premature infants from irreversible blindness

Ocular Minor Surgeries & Laser Treatments for Other Pediatric Eye Conditions

Apart from cataract and ROP, many children suffer from other vision-threatening or visually impairing eye conditions. This project covers 100 cases requiring minor surgeries or laser treatments such as:

a) Pediatric Glaucoma

  • Control of high intraocular pressure
  • Laser interventions or minor surgical corrections
  • Prevention of optic nerve damage

b) Chalazion Surgery

  • Removal of painful eyelid cysts
  • Reducing discomfort and blurred vision

c) Papilloma & Granuloma Removal

  • Excision of benign eyelid growths
  • Preventing obstruction of vision or irritation

d) Dacryocystitis Management

  • Treatment of blocked tear ducts
  • Reduction of chronic tearing and infection

e) Retinal Disorders

  • Laser treatment for retinal tears or lesions
  • Management of pediatric retinal abnormalities

f) Congenital Eye Anomalies

  • Minor corrective surgeries
  • Improving visual function and appearance

g) Trauma-related Eye Procedures

  • Urgent care for accidental injuries
  • Preventing long-term visual consequences

These treatments ensure that children with diverse and complex eye problems receive high-quality care without financial barriers.
